Greek Olympics at Donum Dei

The year is 776 B.C. in the region of Elis, north west of Mt. Olympus. Fast-forward to 2021 in a small school in San Francisco, where full-blooded third graders converged on the basketball court for their own Greek Olympics.

The year is 776 B.C in the region of Elis, north west of Mt. Olympus. Full-blooded Greeks have converged on the city to compete in daring feats of strength, speed, and agility. The ceremonies begin with a sacrifice to Zeus. The competition is fierce, even bloody, but the spoils are worth it.

Fast-forward to 2021 A.D. in a small school in San Francisco. Full-blooded third graders have converged on the basketball court, and prayers have been made to the one true God. Competition is friendly, but heated (no blood allowed!). Let the competition begin!

Our three teams, the Athenians, Corinthians, and Spartans competed in events including the javelin, discus, long jump, and a relay race. The games concluded with a chariot race finale! To wrap up our Olympics, every victor was crowned with an olive leaf wreath and we filled our bellies with a Greek-style feast!

We count it a joy and gift at Donum Dei when we can embody learning in memorable and fun ways! The Greek Olympics gave us the chance to do both of these things today and we are so thankful!

Fostering Wonder in Earth Science and Astronomy

When we consider creation, we are drawn into wonder and worship of the Creator. This year our students saw the glory of God through star parties, a scale model of the solar system, the San Francisco Bay, and the Hayward Fault.
