Why Classical? — Donum Dei Classical Academy

Classical education is the oldest and most proven model in the Western world—

a three-stage journey that matches how children naturally learn and grow.

Transcendentals: Truth, Goodness, & Beauty

Ancient philosophers have long asked questions about what brings meaning to the human experience and have settled on three things that transcend all other qualities: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. Scripture leads us to understand that God is both the source and the destination in the pursuit of these things. We desire to train students to recognize truth, desire goodness, and be captivated by beauty in such a way that they are — in effect — ruined for all of this world’s counterfeits.

Why Classical?

Donum Dei Classical Academy partners with classical and Christian schools around the nation to impart a classical Christian education. Our leaders employ an integrated curriculum and culture that aims to develop the whole human child, inspire a love for learning, and set his or her foundation on Christ.

A student at work in class

This holistic approach to education seeks to educate not only the mind, but also the heart and body of the student at various developmental stages of learning, known as the Trivium: Grammar School, Logic School, and Rhetoric School. Content and methodology are tailored to students’ needs and abilities and build on the fundamentals of the Christian faith to create a comprehensive, biblical worldview. By employing the classical Christian education model at each stage of learning, students progress in ways that promote deep, purposeful learning with high-expectations, high-support, and high-quality student outcomes.

San Francisco provides a wealth of beauty, culture, and diversity from which to teach and learn

With access to performing arts, world-renowned museums, and parks, our students are provided with opportunities to engage with the classical Christian curriculum in exciting and enriching ways. Be it a trip to the San Francisco Symphony or geography mapping in Golden Gate Park, students actively participate in their education outside the classroom.

A Time-Tested Path, Stage by Stage

Grammar school students

Grammar: Soaking in Knowledge

Young children are natural sponges, eager to absorb information about the world around them. The Grammar stage harnesses this God-given capacity by filling students with the foundational facts, vocabulary, and narratives of each subject. Through songs, chants, recitation, and joyful repetition, students build a storehouse of knowledge that will serve them for a lifetime.
Logic school students

Logic: Growing in Understanding

As students enter the Logic stage, their natural inclination to question and debate is channeled into the formal study of reasoning. They learn to identify fallacies, construct syllogisms, and analyze arguments across every subject. This is the stage of understanding—where students move beyond facts to grasp the relationships and principles that connect them.

Rhetoric: Bearing Fruit in Wisdom

In the Rhetoric stage, students synthesize the knowledge and reasoning they have acquired and learn to express truth with beauty and persuasion. They engage with primary sources, craft original arguments, and defend their ideas before peers and mentors. This is the stage of wisdom—where students begin to bear fruit as thoughtful contributors to the world around them.
